Canada’s 150th Birthday Poster

Photography & Design by me…Karen Gibson

Wow, Canada…150 years! So awesome to be part of the celebrations that will, I’m sure, carry on throughout the year.

I felt a real need to contribute to the festivities, in a way that ‘s me and close to my heart…visually. Doing what I love, with my passions…graphic design and photography.

I wanted to create a poster of some sort, not only to commemorate our wonderful country, but to promote my love of outdoor exploration and our beautiful land…through my lens.

As part of my normal design process, I started with pencil and paper, making a list of things I thought represented Canada…you know, moose, beaver, loon, inukshuk, etc., etc. I decided on the maple leaf, for its simplicity and accessibility.
The forest was visited on numerous occasions and the shuttle clicked many, many times as I experimented with different compositions and points of view, examining each photo when I returned home.

It took a while, but the end result finally appeared. I placed the Maple Leaf between my lens and the penetrating sun. That was it…the sun created rays, as it shone through the leaf, making it glow. I knew I got my pic…yeahhhh!

Now…what to write, what words to use? How about, ‘GO Outside EXPLORE’. Yep…I do want to convey that message, and it works, but, I wanted the message to say something more, to express Canada and its’ 150th year.
What better way to communicate just that?

STRONG & Free eh!

HAPPY CANADA DAY!!!
